Your bank data. Your machine.
KontoKit fetches your transactions straight from your bank via FinTS/HBCI and stores them, encrypted, on your own machine. Plus a web interface for your home network. No cloud service in between.
The problem: your transactions are yours, but they live elsewhere.
If you want to analyse your own accounts, the options are limited: each bank’s own portal, one at a time; aggregator services that process your credentials and transactions on someone else’s servers; or desktop software that is barely maintained.
Almost all German banks offer an open, standardised interface in FinTS/HBCI. A modern tool that uses it and keeps the data where it belongs is rare.
KontoKit is that tool for one household: fetch, keep, search. Your bank data never leaves your machine.
What KontoKit does
Fetching. Balances and transactions for any number of accounts at any number of banks, via FinTS/HBCI. Automatically on a schedule, or by hand. TAN methods: PIN/TAN, pushTAN, chipTAN and photoTAN. You enter the TAN in the terminal or in the browser. Unattended fetching works only where the bank doesn’t require a TAN per fetch.
Storing. A local, encrypted database. Duplicate bookings are detected without losing two genuinely identical bookings on the same day. Amounts are calculated exactly, never as floating-point numbers.
Categorising. Rules by payee, account or amount range, with a preview. Whatever you assigned by hand is never overwritten by a rule.
Analysing. Spending by category, largest payees, monthly trends and balance history. Recurring payments such as subscriptions and fixed costs are detected and projected to a monthly figure. Under-detection is preferred to over-detection.
Several budgets. Household, property, business: each budget gets its own encrypted database and is analysed separately. Several users with logins are possible; each sees only their own budgets.
Exporting and backing up. Export to CSV (for German Excel) and JSON. Encrypted backups with verification and restore.
Passing on. KontoKit works on its own, and Ziffero, Edifondo and Pinoterra work without KontoKit. If you use both, KontoKit hands new transactions to the product after each fetch, with no retyping. Bank access stays with you: your PIN and credentials never leave your machine, and the other product receives only the transactions.
Bilingual. The interface and the command line are available in German and English.
Why KontoKit
Your data stays with you
No cloud provider, no central database, no analysis of your financial data by third parties. PIN, user ID and transactions sit in an encrypted database on your machine, backups included.
German banking standard
FinTS/HBCI is the established standard for exchanging data with German banks. KontoKit speaks it directly, with no adapters and no middlemen.
A tool that checks itself
kontokit doctor checks file permissions, credentials, backup age and schema version, with no network access and without printing secrets. The web interface warns you when a fetch failed or the backup is out of date.
Planned, but not part of the beta.
A beta is planned in about a month. Deliberately not included yet:
Transfers. Besides reading transactions, KontoKit will initiate transfers using the FinTS standard.
Built-in TLS. Beyond the machine itself, the web interface is reachable only behind a reverse proxy with TLS. A built-in solution comes later.
Cloud sync. Conceivable as a later feature, no decision yet. Until then all data stays local.
More banks. Not every bank implements FinTS the same way. Institution-specific quirks are added over time.
Usage
KontoKit is free to use under the MIT licence, for private individuals and businesses alike. It is intended to run on your own machine or server, for your own accounts and data.
This also applies when it is connected to Ziffero, Edifondo or Pinoterra: you run KontoKit yourself, for your own accounts. We recommend not offering KontoKit as a service to third parties. It is neither designed nor tested for that. Anyone who does so alone bears the regulatory and legal obligations. KontoKit is provided without warranty or liability and is not legal or financial advice.
Try KontoKit.
KontoKit is going open source under the MIT licence. If you’d like to test it, or want to know whether your bank is supported, write to us.
