DATEV is the dominant accounting platform in Germany — it’s what most tax advisors (Steuerberater) use. But DATEV is expensive and designed for professionals, not for business owners who need a quick look at their finances between client calls. A full licence runs several hundred euros per year before setup fees.
Lexware is affordable and widely known. The interface is not from this decade.
Sevdesk and Fastbill are modern and well-designed. They are not DATEV-compatible. Every year, that gap becomes a manual handoff to your tax advisor — with the rework, questions, and time loss that follows.

How Ziffero works
Bank import. Upload bank statements via CSV or connect your account directly. No manual entry.
Automatic categorisation. Transactions are assigned to categories based on rules and transaction history. You confirm or correct — that’s it.
VAT reporting (Umsatzsteuervoranmeldung). Ziffero drafts your monthly or quarterly VAT return based on your categorised transactions. You review it. Your tax advisor signs off.
DATEV export. When your annual accounts are due, export in the DATEV format your Steuerberater already works in. No special handling required on their end.
Anomaly flags. Duplicate amounts, unfamiliar payees, statistical outliers — flagged before they become a problem.
Bank transactions via KontoKit. Optionally, Ziffero takes transactions from KontoKit, our local home banking tool. Ziffero works without KontoKit too; bank access stays with you, and your PIN and credentials never reach Ziffero.
